AUGUST 2018
According to the 2017 Digital News Report by Reuters Institute and University of Oxford, 38% of Americans avoided the news and 47% of which said it was because the news negatively affects their mood.
Tell Me Something Good (TMSG) is your daily dose of good news direct from your Google Assistant. Receive a short news summary about people who are working to solve problems for our communities and our world. These stories are curated through the lens of solutions journalism by our partners at the Solutions Journalism Network (SJN). SJN is a nonpartisan nonprofit with the mission to spread the practice of rigorous reporting that spotlights responses to problems, so that we can learn from them.
This newish approach to journalism has proven to empower and uplift audiences, combating the impact of negative news. We tested the effectiveness of the feature with Googlers in partnership with Dr. Karen McIntyre of Virginia Commonwealth University, one of the leading researchers in the space. We found that those who used TMSG were significatnly more likely to report feeling more positive while reading, watching, or listening to the news. This suggests that consuming solutions news stories can mitigate the effect of negative news.
TMSG is still available to users in the United States and has since launched in France as "Donne-Moi Une Bonne Nouvelle” and Poland as “Powiedz mi coś dobrego”.
