A WebVR Experiment in partnership with NASA JPL.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab built 3D models of the Martian surface using 200K+ photos taken by the Curiosity Rover over the 5 years it was on Mars (landing to date of project). JPL scientists use these models to examine the terrain and geology for evidence that Mars was ever suitable for life.

Google Creative Lab partnered with NASA JPL to create an immersive experience using these same scientific models for everyone to explore Mars the same way JPL staff do.

Visit four important mission sites, plus a fifth that is updated by JPL to show where the rover is now. Explore key points of interest, rover features, and geological formations with narration by mission scientist Katie Stack Morgan.

The experience is built using WebVR, a technology that lets you use virtual reality right in your browser, without installing any apps. You can try it on a virtual reality headset, phone, or computer.

To date, 2.2M people have spent 18.6 years worth of time exploring the surface of Mars.
